Most IIT offices, classrooms, and laboratories have at least one location that provides up to two data jacks. The IIT standard colors for data jacks are yellow/orange, and voice jacks are green/blue; where old cabling still exists, the color of the jacks might differ.

Residence Halls, Keating Hall, MTCC, Commons, Hermann Hall, Galvin Library, Crown Hall, Materials and Metals, and Ed Kaplan Institute are primarily wireless access buildings. The wired infrastructure is often limited to security and Facility needs.

In older residence halls, there may be some legacy wired network ports available that are supported on a best effort basis. Where available in MSV, despite labeling (which may be incorrect), when looking in from the hallway the ports on the left side are for Internet access and the ports on the right side are for voice access. In Fowler Hall, it may be reversed.

IIT/OTS provides Internet access in sorority and fraternity houses. For some of the fraternity houses, the wired network is handled internally.
