Configuring Eudora

Create an Account or Set up a new Personality

Each new Email account you set up on your Eudora is refered to as a Personality. You set up an email account by clicking on the Tools menu and selecting Personalities.

You find the below Dialog box marked Personalities. It may have a list of email "Personalities" already in it for your purposes you are interested in the Icon marked "<Dominant>".

Right Click on the word "<Dominant>" and it should display the menu options shown below.

You are interested in the Menu option marked "New..." click on it to display the below dialog box.

You want to Create a brand new email account (well it might be one you are using for years but as far as this Eudora knows it is brand new). So choose that option and hit "Next >".

Now Personality Name is what your email box will be described as within Eudora and is not displayed on your email. So feel free to be as creative as you like. Then Click Next >.

With Personal Information you do not have the same lee way as you do with Personality Name as this is what people will see displayed on the emails you send them so if you type in "professional spammer" chances are they will delete the email without reading it. When you have decided how you want to represent your self to the world at large Click Next > .

The email address you fill in in the Email box is the email to which people who click reply to will send an email. In my case although I'm setting up this account to send and recieve email from another account, I would rather receive emails in my main iit.edu account so that is the email I place there. The Convention is to place the email you are sending from in this box so that replies will be sent back to this email box (It avoids any confusion for you as to who sent the email and why). When you have decided where you want to receive replies to your emails (preferably where you are sending it from) then Click Next > .

The Login Name is the Login to your email account. In most cases it is your email id without the @ part of it. Fill this in accurately or you will have trouble logging in to your email account. Then Click Next > .

Next you are required to fill in your incomming email server. This varies based on what server your email account resides on. This example will only work if your email account is a Faculty account all others should visit http://ots.iit.edu/howto/checkemail.php for a detailed explanation of your incoming and outgoing email servers. If your email account is not a main campus email account you will have to consult your campus support desk on what the incoming and outgoing email servers are.

Another important point to note is that Although some of our email servers are IMAP enabled POP is the prefered choice we recommend. When you have entered the correct information Click Next

If IIT is your Internet Service Provider (ISP) - i.e. you are connected to the internet via a LAN connection on campus or have a Dial up account from IIT - then you can use one of the Three email servers we have as your Outgoing Email Server. For more information please visit http://supportdesk.iit.edu/server.htm . Note if you are outside IIT's domain you can still use us as your incomming email server you will however have to get the outgoing email server information from your ISP .

In most cases you want to allow authentication unless your ISP specifies otherwise. If we are your ISP then we suggest you allow authentication. When you are sure you have entered the correct outgoing email server , Click Next > .

This should be your reward for your perseverance. In my case the Personality was named Steven so thats what the account is now called and it links to my email account on charlie (now no longer accessible as that server was shut down).

When you want to receive emails from your mail box. The following box should appear (that is if you allow Authentication).

Provided your password is correct you should receive email. The process for sending email is quite similar. If you want to delete emails that you receive from the server or make other changes to your email settings please read the Remainder of this Tutorial.

EMAIL Settings in Eudora

To make changes to your email settings. Revisit the Personalities Menu in Tools Menu to display the Dialog Box displayed below (If you have forgotten scroll to the top and look at the two screen shots at the top). Click on the "Personality" you want to modify. In my example I want to change the Steven personality so I Right Click on Steven.

When you double click on Properties you should see the below settings you made. Feel free to make any changes you feel are necessary to the original settings. You can also use this to correct any mistakes you made previously. The more interesting settings are in "Incoming Mail" tab next to Generic Properties.

Below is a look at the tab marked "Incoming Mail" . If you check the leave mail on server option please note that if the emails on the server go over your quota it will cause emails to bounce back to sender. The prefered option is to delete emails from server by leaving that box unchecked. The emails will be saved on your computer.
