MISSION: ONLY E-MAIL YOU WANT
In an effort to stop the flood of unwanted e-mail messages being received
by the IIT community, the Office of Technology Services deployed Brightmail
Anti-Spam software campus-wide on December 18, 2003. Brightmail Anti-Spam
is the industry’s leading tool for filtering unwanted e-mail messages.
Q.How does Brightmail Anti-Spam software control spam?
A.The software scans incoming e-mail messages and quarantines those messages
matching a spam criterion defined on the constantly updated Brightmail
Company database.
Q.What will happen to those messages that Brightmail identifies
as spam?
A.Those messages which Brightmail blocks are directed to a quarantined
message folder on the e-mail server where they will be stored for 30 days
then deleted.
Q.Are there any settings I need to configure as an end user?
A.All configurations are done at the server level. The software is transparent
to the end user.
Q.Could the Brightmail software mistakenly quarantine a legitimate
e-mail message?
A.While no software is perfect, users of Brightmail can expect false positive
rates as low as 1 in 1 million messages identified as spam.
Q.I did not receive an e-mail message I was expecting. Can someone
check to see if the message was mistakenly quarantined and can OTS send
it to me?
A.Call the OTS Support Desk at X-7DESK (7-3375) or enter an incident in
the ticketing system at http://support.iit.edu. If you provide the sender’s
email address, OTS e-mail administrators will search the quarantined message
folder and forward the message to you if it is there. If appropriate,
administrators can configure Brightmail to not quarantine messages from
this sender in the future.
Q.I keep receiving unwanted e-mail messages. Can someone configure
Brightmail to quarantine these messages?
A.If you continue to receive e-mail messages you believe should be filtered,
you will be able to setup self-defined filters through the SunONE Webmail
interface. For information on how to configure your own e-mail filters
go to http://support.iit.edu and
choose the FAQ “How do I set up my own e-mail filters?"
If you have any further questions regarding the Brightmail Anti-Spam
deployment please call the OTS Support Desk at X-7DESK (7-3375) or log
into http://support.iit.edu to read
FAQs or create an incident.
