| All registered students
at IIT are given an email account for their use that is of the format
username@iit.edu. The FAQs below will help
students understand how to send and receive e-mail from this account,
as well as how to use it in conjunction with any existing accounts they
may have.
What is my username?
Username and Initial Password for new students beginning Summer (Fall) 2005:
Username: Your Username is your UID (Unified Identification). If you do not know your UID you can find it by looking yourself up at http://myuid.iit.edu
Username and Initial Password for students who started prior to Summer 2005
Student usernames are usually a seven-letter name
formed by taking the first four letters of the last name, and adding the
first three letters of the first name to that (ex. John Smith would have
a username of smitjoh). If a student's last name or first name is shorter,
additional letters are taken for the other name to complete a seven letter
username. If a student's entire name is less than seven letters, then
their username will be less than 7 letters. In the case that students have the same username
as one that already exists, a number is added to the end of the username
(starting with 1 and increasing for each subsequent student with the same
username). For students that need assistance in finding out their username,
they can look up their information in the online directory at http://phonebook.iit.edu.
What is my password?
New student accounts are given an initial password of the form:
Password : MMDD XXXX
MMDD – Is Month and Day of your birth date
XXXX – Are the last 4 digits of your CWID (which can be obtained through Webfor Students)
For example, if you were born on July 4th, and your CWID is 12345678, your new password is: 07045678
Students are advised to change their password at
their first login. Passwords are recommended to be at least six characters
long and use both letters and numbers. For instructions on how to change your
password and use other features in your webmail account, click here Where do I check my mail?
Student e-mail can be accessed over the Internet
through http://webmail.iit.edu, or through e-mail programs such as Microsoft
Outlook or Netscape Messenger by setting their POP3 or IMAP
clients to the server students.iit.edu for both incoming and outgoing
messages.
How large is my mailbox?
Students are given mailboxes of 100 MB.
I already have another e-mail account that I want
to use, what should I do with my IIT account?
Students that wish to use another e-mail
account should log into the Webmail interface
and setup auto-forwarding so that any mail sent to their IIT e-mail address
will forward to their outside account (help for this is available on the
ots website at http://ots.iit.edu/newemail/newEmail/index.html
under E-mail Services). They should also log into Web for Students and
change their primary e-mail address so that all IIT related announcements
and correspondence from professors are directed to the correct place.
